Linden Hills is a premier neighborhood of Minneapolis located in the southwest part of the city. It began in the late 1800s where city folks went to get away from the noise of city life. Today the neighborhood is full of many new homes while still maintaining some of the historical character of its past. Residents enjoy many amenities including dining, shopping and recreation. Here is a look at Linden Hills of Minneapolis.

History

Since the neighborhood sits right next to Lake Harriet and Lake Calhoun, city dwellers since its start would retreat here for an escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. Many cottages were built in the late 19th century and early 20th century but have since been mostly replaced.

A historic trolley line known as the Lake Harriet-Como Streetcar, that runs between Lake Calhoun and Lake Harriet is still present in the neighborhood. The area of Linden Hills where the trolley runs is full of commercial real estate. 

Today

Linden Hills is situated near Edina in southwest Minneapolis. It’s bordered by France Avenue to the west, Lake Calhoun to the north, West 47th Street to the south and Lake Harriet to the east.

The area is full of restaurants, shopping and cafes. Head over to West 44th Street at Beard Avenue South or Chowen Avenue South at France Avenue to enjoy eclectic shops and eateries. Locals spend their time at specialty shops like Wild Rumpus Bookstore, The Zumbro Café and Creative Kidstuff. The area also has many alternative health practitioners. Many people call this area downtown Linden Hills.

Homes & Recreation

Most of the homes in the area are Tudor style. There are also many large bungalows. You’ll see mostly single-family homes, townhouses, lakefront homes and condominiums. Due to the beauty of the area and the great amenities, families are drawn here, as well as retirees, professionals and physicians.

Being so close to Lake Calhoun and Lake Harriet, many people enjoy the lakes for recreational use. There are biking and walking trails, picnic areas and playgrounds. They even have concerts at Lake Harriet Bandshell.
