The Stone Arch Bridge is one of the top historic attractions in the Twin Cities area. It’s quite unique and the only bridge of its’ kind found on the Mississippi River. The bridge is made of limestone and granite. It measures 2,100 feet long and 28 feet wide with 23 arches. The river is found below the beautiful St. Anthony Falls, as well.

History of the Bridge

The Stone Arch Bridge was built by James J. Hill in 1883. He was a railroad baron and built the bridge to increase the movement of goods and people across the Mississippi river. It was a working railroad bridge until 1965.

It became a National Historic Engineering Landmark and was rehabilitated in 1980. The bridge is used mainly by walkers and bicyclists today looking to enjoy the St. Anthony Falls.

Information and Location

The Stone Arch Bridge provides a link for the St. Anthony Falls Heritage Trail. It provides bicycle lanes and pedestrian walkways. The Heritage Trail is a part of a larger system of trails and includes directional signs and kiosks throughout.

The bridge provides plenty of year-round activities and events. Many guided walking tours stop at the bridge, as well.

The Stone Arch Bridge is located at the intersection of Portland Avenue and West River Road in Downtown Minneapolis.
