Minnesota Condominium Market
There are many advantages that come with condo, townhouse, or loft living. Depending on the community, amenities can range from just a community pool to a full menu of services, such as a valet and concierge. Minnesota lofts and condos are also low-maintenance. Most buildings have their own HOA (Home Owners Association), so there’s no need to shovel snow, mow the lawn, or hire a pool service. The only thing homeowners are responsible for is the upkeep of each individual unit. Additionally, condos in Minnesota are affordable. Unless you’re in the market for a luxury penthouse in a high-end community, the cost to purchase a condo, townhome, or loft is typically far less than a single-family home.
Condos, Townhomes & Lofts – What’s the Difference?
The biggest difference between the three property types is ownership. A loft or condo owner owns the unit plus a percentage of the common areas. The townhome owner, on the other hand, owns the unit plus the ground that it sits on. Another difference between the two is that a townhome has its own roof whereas a condo may or may not, depending on the building style.
Lofts are completely different from condos and townhomes because they typically started out as something other than residential units. Most lofts are located in commercial buildings in urban settings and they’ve been converted into wide-open apartments, usually with very high ceilings. City Place Lofts on Hennepin Avenue in Minneapolis is a perfect example of the loft concept. The building once housed a bank when it opened in 1919. This doesn’t mean all lofts are in old buildings or have been converted, however. Stonebridge Lofts in the Mill District project was completed in 2014 and offers newly-built lofts and some amazing amenities.
